  16. <p>Small victories at a New York school
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     No one would confuse Seward Park High School with Eton. Half
  19. the students at this underfunded, overcrowded facility on New
  20. York City's Lower East Side are from single-parent homes, and
  21. 65% come from families eligible for welfare. As many as 150
  22. have been abandoned by their parents or are from families that
  23. have been evicted. Drugs and alcohol are a way of life. That
  24. any learning takes place under such circumstances is nothing
  25. short of miraculous. But miracles can happen, as former New
  26. York Times reporter Samuel Freedman demonstrates in Small
  27. Victories: The Real World of a Teacher, Her Students & Their
  28. High School (Harper & Row; 431 pages; $22.95).

  30. <p>     Freedman, who spent the 1987-88 school year observing
  31. Seward, focuses on English and journalism teacher Jessica
  32. Siegel. A self-proclaimed "salvage and reclamation" expert,
  33. Siegel, 41, struggles to pull her predominantly black, Hispanic
  34. and Asian students into the safety of the middle class. "I put
  35. so much energy and so much emotion into those kids," says
  36. Siegel, "sometimes I think my job is being a professional
  37. mother." Her efforts are rewarded as she watches the most
  38. dedicated of her charges march off to Syracuse, Sarah Lawrence
  39. and the University of Chicago.

  41. <p>     Despite its often brutal subject matter--one student hangs
  42. himself--this is an upbeat book about triumphing against the
  43. odds. Freedman offers moving portraits of two immigrant kids--one Chinese, the other Dominican--battling to make it in
  44. their adopted country. He also captures the rewards of
  45. teaching, while exposing the hardships. Considering the
  46. obstacles confronting Seward's teachers and their students,
  47. Freedman's book may be misnamed. The victories seem large
  48. indeed.
